Choosing the Right Firework Barrage
When choosing a firework cake or barrage, consider the number of shots, duration, noise level and firing pattern. Smaller barrages can be ideal for garden celebrations, while larger multi-shot fireworks can create impressive displays and powerful finales.
-
Shots and duration: the shot count is the number of tubes the cake fires. More shots usually means a longer display.
-
Tube size: bigger tubes give bigger bursts. Larger cakes use 25mm or 30mm tubes, and 30mm is the largest bore allowed for consumer fireworks in the UK.
-
Space: check the safety distance on each cake. Category 2 garden cakes need 5 or 8 metres, and Category 3 cakes need 25 metres.
-
Noise: for a quieter display, see our low noise fireworks. For maximum impact, see our loud fireworks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a firework cake and a barrage?
The terms are often used interchangeably. Both generally describe multi-shot fireworks that produce a sequence of effects from a single ignition. Some fire straight up, others fan out across the sky, and several cakes joined into one firework make a compound firework.
Are firework barrages suitable for garden displays?
Many barrages are suitable for garden displays, provided the manufacturer's minimum safety distances can be met. Category 2 garden cakes need 5 or 8 metres between the firework and your audience, and Category 3 cakes need 25 metres; the distance is printed on every firework.
Can I buy firework cakes and barrages online?
Yes. Norfolk Fireworks offers online ordering with UK delivery available, subject to postcode coverage and delivery conditions. Free Click & Collect is also available from our Stalham showroom.
What does the shot count mean?
It is the number of individual tubes in the cake. Each tube fires one effect, so a 49-shot cake fires 49 effects in sequence from a single fuse.
Can I store cakes before Bonfire Night or New Year?
Yes, within the legal limits: up to 50kg of 1.4G fireworks for 21 days, or 5kg of 1.3G fireworks for 3 days. If you mix the two, everything counts as 1.3G. See fireworks and UK law.
Can you help me choose?
Yes. Fill in our quotes and advice form with your budget, the space you have and the date, and we will suggest cakes to suit.
